Solid Structural Design Ltd. recently provided structural engineering services for the repair of a severely damaged floor joist in an approximately 60-year-old residential building.
During an HVAC installation, a duct was required to pass perpendicular to the existing floor joists. To accommodate the ductwork, the HVAC contractor cut through one of the existing floor joists. The joist was approximately 9.5 inches deep, and an opening of approximately 8 × 8 inches was created. A significant portion of the bottom of the joist was removed, leaving the structural member severely compromised.
Because the floor joist was an important component supporting the main floor, the modification required a structural assessment and engineered repair solution.
Solid Structural Design Ltd. reviewed the existing condition and developed a practical reinforcement design. Rather than replacing the entire joist or undertaking extensive demolition, the damaged member was reinforced using light-gauge steel panels designed to restore the required structural capacity.
The repair was subsequently completed in accordance with the engineering design. This approach provided a cost-effective structural solution, minimized unnecessary removal of existing building components, and allowed the HVAC installation to remain in place.
This project demonstrates the value of professional structural engineering when existing structures are modified during renovation or mechanical work. Proper assessment and an engineered repair can often provide an efficient solution while avoiding costly reconstruction.
Solid Structural Design Ltd. provides structural engineering services for existing buildings, renovations, structural modifications, structural repairs, and construction projects throughout Alberta.
